Chilli Con Carne BeansFor some purists there should be no beans in Chilli Con Carne but for most of us Chilli has always been a dish we had with beans. Beans are healthy and nutritious, make the dish go further which saves us money and means we cut down our red meat consumption a little bit. Also they create a texture contrast with the meat and pepper stew that I quite like, so personally I'm in favour. For me Chilli was always made with kidney beans and that is still my preference but many other beans can be used. Haricot beans are a great softer alternative and kids love them which you can't often say for the kidney beans. Other beans to look out for and give a try include pinto beans, gungko beans, Black beans, cannellini bean, flageolet, Azuki beans, and many more. Dried beans need soaking generally overnight but always refer to the packet. Kidney beans are highly poisonous if they are not soaked and cooked properly so be careful!
Tinned beans are ready to use straight away and a lot easier to use, but again try it both ways and see what you prefer.
